Hecker, IL

In the eastern tip of Monroe County, Hecker was initially called Freedom.  Originally Hecker was laid out on land belonging to Theodore Hilgard and surveyed by the county surveyor, Thomas Singleton in 1840.  The first home was built in 1849 and in 1895 the residents of the then-called Freedom decided to incorporate in order to expedite the completion of their roads and sidewalks. However, after the Post Office complained about another town named Freedom in Illinois, the citizens of the newly incorporated town had to think of another name. Colonel Friedrich Franz Karl Hecker, a well-known and well-respected German revolutionist and Civil War hero, was the lucky honoree.  Thus Freedom, Illinois became Hecker, Illinois.

Today Hecker is a small and quiet community that feels like family to those who live there.  With approximately 500 citizens, Hecker is a rural community that has the advantages of a small town while nestled amid rich Illinois farmland.  Anchored by a village park, large community center and a couple of churches, Hecker is truly a lovely gem among the towns of Monroe County. Located roughly nine miles from the Monroe county seat of Waterloo, Hecker has all the advantages of quiet, rural living while being easily accessible to the amenities of the larger towns of Waterloo, Red Bud and Belleville(located in St. Clair County).
