HARRISONVILLE TELEPHONE COMPANY INTRODUCES FIBERNET

HTC FiberNet is a new delivery strategy designed to bring the latest telecommunication services into consumer’s households.  HTC FiberNet is a network deployment strategy that provides a fiber optic connection from our telephone switching location all the way into a consumer’s home.  Standard telephone connections are typically delivered with copper wires into homes, but with HTC FiberNet you get the very latest telecommunications services delivered over a state of the art fiber optic network.  HTC FiberNet will fulfill consumer requirements by offering the same high quality voice connections consumers are accustomed to receiving, along with providing enhanced high-speed data capabilities above and beyond traditional copper wire networks.  These increased capabilities will fulfill both the current and future telecommunications requirements for end users.

Is HTC FiberNet available in all areas?

Currently HTC FiberNet is only available in select locations within the Harrisonville Telephone Company serving area.  As technology and the Harrisonville Telephone Company network evolve, Harrisonville Telephone Company will continually address the further deployment of HTC FiberNet.  The initial new development locations for service availability are Bluff Meadows in Valmeyer, Illinois; Country Club Hills, Shady Springs, and Remington Ridge in Waterloo, Illinois; Stonecrest and Village of Wernings in Columbia, Illinois.

What customer equipment will be required?

For standard utilization of the HTC FiberNet services, end users will require no additional equipment.  Voice services on the HTC FiberNet connection will utilize standard phone handset devices commonly used in the normal household.  High-speed data services in the HTC FiberNet connection utilize the same common computer and/or router equipment utilized for other broadband technologies.

One area of difference on the HTC FiberNet connection is the equipment provided by Harrisonville Telephone Company at the end users location.  In the HTC FiberNet network, delivery of services into the customer location is different than the traditional copper wire telephone network.  The Network Interface Device (NID) in the HTC FiberNet architecture is a smart electronic device with requirements and capabilities above and beyond the standard copper wire NID.  One particular difference between the copper wire and fiber NID is the powering requirement at the end user location.  In the HTC FiberNet architecture, the smart NID device requires power from the customer premise location.  This powering requirement is AC power in the form of an AC electrical outlet.  Powering at the end user location is a requirement for the HTC FiberNet service.  In addition, there is a power backup unit to provide a standby power source in the event of a power failure at the end user location.  This standby power mechanism will provide voice standby power for up to 8 hours in the event of a commercial power failure.

In the HTC FiberNet deployment each home comes equipped with the following devices.

  • Optical Network Terminal (ONT) – this device terminates the fiber connection into the home and delivers standard telephone, data, and potential video services into the home.

  • Battery Backup Unit (BBU) – the BBU is the device that provides standby power in the event of a commercial power failure.  In the event of a commercial power failure, the BBU can provide up to 8 hours of voice standby power.

  • Power Supply Unit (PSU) – the PSU is the device that provides power to the BBU, which in turn provides power to the ONT.  The PSU is typically mounted close to the BBU and requires AC electric power in the form of a conveniently located AC outlet.  For best operation, a dedicated AC electrical outlet is recommended.
