Top Technology Design Truths and Myths

Top Technology Design Truths

1. Actions Speak Louder Than Words
  • What people say they do is not what they really do
  • What people say they want is not what they really need
  • What people complain about is only at the surface
  • It's better to observe customers in the context of their actual work
  • It's better to observe customers in the context of their actual use of the technology design

2. Technology Design is Really Just Trial and Error

  • You only really know how good a technology design is after people try using it
  • Why not have them use it as soon as possible?

Top Technology Design Myths

1. People can tell you exactly what they want.

  • Refer to the Top Truths

2. Anyone can design good technology.

  • Expertise in business, programming, visual arts, or communications does not necessarily translate to expertise in computer technology design.
  • Many projects make the mistake of assuming the 'experts' in a business department are best qualified to dictate the screen design for that department.

3. The more documents you have, the better the plan.

  • Many organizations rely on large methodologies with extensive documentation.
  • Careful planning and documentation is a good thing, but certainly not an assurance that the finished technology will be something that people can use and will want to use.

4. No one can be expected to use technology without a lot of training, manuals, and support.

  • The more that technology can be designed to stand on its own, the better it will be.
  • Having said that, every technology will still have its share of documentation, training, and support.
