Mississippi River at Melvin Price Locks and Dam, Madison County, Illinois - January 25, 2009

1. This was the initial observation at roost with Ring-billed Gulls along the Mississippi River, Madison County, Illinois, 12:17 p.m. CST.

2. A yawn reveals an orange gape.

3. Note the long sloping forehead and slender bill.

4. The eye is dark, the bill is thin with a red spot and dark smudging, and the legs are pale with a hint of yellow..

5. The left foot is amputated at mid-tarsus. The legs are dull pink-yellow with the webbing of the right foot pink.

6. Again, the legs are dull pink-yellow.

7. P10 with dark sub-terminal tip, large mirrors on P10-P9. P7-P5 show white tongue tips, P4 lightly marked on both wings. Broad trailing edge to secondaries.

8. The forehead is flat and the crown is peaked behind eye. The beady eye is rather forward on face. A unique look compared to an American Herring Gull.

9. The bill appears long and thin in this shot.

10. The right tarsus and tibia thin are dull yellow and the webbing of is foot pink. Note the extensive pale bases to outer primaries.

11. The white tongue tips to P7-P5 are visible from above and below.

12. From below, black outer web of P10 extending well beyond pale inner web, wide pale tongues extending deep into P10-P8.

13. From above, inner webs of P9-P8 showing thin pale tongues that end before black tip to P7. Dark mark on outer web of P4.

14. Inner web of P8 showing a thin pale tongue, extensive white tongue tips to P7-P5, dark mark on outer web of P4.
