Birmingham surfacing photo was taken onboard MONOB by Lloyd Everton,
Newport News Shipbuilding Corporation Chief Photographer with a Lieca 35 mm camera
and a 500 mm lens. The time and date of the surfacing was approximately 1204 19
November 1977. Location was Exuma Sound, West Indies. Using a motor drivce, a series
of photos were taken at 1/7 second intervals covering essentially all of the surfacing. The
image size essentilaly fills the 35 mm frame size. The range to MONOB at surfacing was
approximately 500 yards and the Angle on the Bow was controlled by the crew to be 90
degrees to eliminate collision risk. Tracking to MONOB was maintained continuously
throughout the test. The Emergency Blow shipyard test was from test depth. Ship rise angle
during the test was controlled at plus 20 degrees and propulsion power was se for 10 knots
at test depth and remained constant during the test. The photo soon appeared in the front
page of the New York Times, and has been used extensively by the Submarine Force and
others. It remains on display in Bancroft Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy, and is the
entrance motif (wall size) at SubTraFac in San Diego CA.
