Dialogue Rules and Tips

Speaker tag= synonym for said + speaker name

Capitalize the first word of every direct quote.

Start a new paragraph every time the speaker changes.

 

Part One.  Write a quote that will work for your character for each of the following examples.

 

1.          “Direct quote,” speaker tag.

 Example:   “I can’t believe it,” she exclaimed.

 

   “____________________________________________,”  ________________.

 

2.                  Speaker  tag, “Direct quote.”

Example:  Randy offered, “She seemed so quiet at first.”

     

 

____________________, “__________________________________________.”

 

3.                  “Direct quote, “ speaker tag, “direct quote continued.”

Example:   “I never knew,” the waitress revealed, “that you wanted a coffee.”

 

“_______________________,” ____________, “________________________.”

 

 

Part Two.   Create a conversation between two characters.  Vary your dialogue patterns, using at least two of the three patterns.  Start a new paragraph every time the speaker changes.
