Jesus For You
“Not since the great depression,” said one man comparing the economic problems of our day. Another recalled the recession of the 1970’s. Lay-offs, loss of income for retirees living on investments, reduced wages, the housing slump, gas prices, increased cost of goods and services, it all adds up. In fact, at times it seems to pile up to the point that families are wrenched apart by depression, discouragement, and despair. If we are to survive we need help and strength not from within, but from outside of ourselves. Jesus Christ promises you such help. “Lo, I am with you always,” He said (Matt. 28:20). He is your constant companion in your daily struggles with the world, and with your sinful nature that constantly feeds on those troubles. Depressed, Jesus makes us hopeful. He does not let us sink in the troubled waters, but extends His hand to lift us up, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am with you” (Matt. 14:27). Discouraged, He comforts us. He shelters us under His “wings,” the Psalmist reminds us (Ps. 61:4), where we can take refuge from the storms of life that would overwhelm us. In times of despair He encourages us to “Wait . . . be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Ps. 27:14). Above all, though stained with sin, Jesus makes us forgiven saints. Our troubles and trials serve to remind us that we are but sinners. Often a voice whispers that we are being punished for our sins and deserve our troubles. Yet, Christ comes to soothe our troubled conscience with blessed assurance that He has paid the price, blotting out our transgressions through His shed blood on the cross, making them “white as snow” (Is. 1:18), and remembered no more. Although children of God are not perfect, we have a perfect Savior who forgives us; we have a perfect Lord who overcomes all things; we have a prefect friend whose daily presence in our lives enables us to be strong and to bear up under whatever comes our way. You have Jesus for you. God’s peace be with you, Pastor MacDougall Romans 15:13
