Hecker, IL

In the eastern tip of Monroe County, Hecker was initially called Freedom.  Originally Hecker was laid out on land belonging to Theodore Hilgard and surveyed by the county surveyor, Thomas Singleton in 1840.  The first home was built in 1849 and in 1895 the residents of the then-called Freedom decided to incorporate in order to expedite the completion of their roads and sidewalks. However, after the Post Office complained about another town named Freedom in Illinois, the citizens of the newly incorporated town had to think of another name. Colonel Friedrich Franz Karl Hecker, a well-known and well-respected German revolutionist and Civil War hero, was the lucky honoree.  Thus Freedom, Illinois became Hecker, Illinois.
