Renault, IL

With just a few streets, a couple of churches and a restaurant to call its own, Renault is home to approximately 25 people.  Cozily set amid lush Illinois farmland and miles from the nearest town, Renault is an oasis of a small community with a neighborly feel.  Located in the southern half of Monroe County, Renault is an unincorporated area about 14 miles directly south of Waterloo, the Monroe County seat.

Renault and the surrounding area within Monroe County are named after Philip Francois Renault, one of the most infamous men from the early French settlements in Illinois.  In 1719 Renault left France and arrived in Illinois to develop mines.  Upon his arrival, Renault founded the now defunct St. Philippe, the first organized community in Illinois. The exact area now known as Renault was originally called Glasgow City, so named by James Glasgow who laid out Renault in the year 1860. Eventually, the people of Glasgow City formally adopted the name which the local Post Office used when describing the Glasgow City delivery area, Renault.
